Zoo Miami

Zoo Miami
1 Miami Zoo Monorail, Miami, FL 33177

One of our first stops as a family was to Zoo Miami.  We’ve now visited twice and bought a year long pass.  Next summer I might opt for the summer pass that allows access to multiple parks and museums.  The kids love zoos in general and they frequently request we take the drive to Zoo Miami.  It’s further south than Miami and takes an hour drive from where we are living now.

With under $18 tickets for adults and $14 for kids, it is reasonably priced.
Kids 2 and under are FREE!

Must See: Orangutans - swinging and yelling, the kids were thrilled with the excitement.

Pros: Very large property, lots to see and do.  You might not get to see everything in one day (unless you rent a surrey/bike which seemed expensive to us).  We discovered the monorail on our second trip and for a low fee you can ride all day and see a lot more of the zoo.  Just be prepared to wait at monorail stops for a few moments up to 45 minutes.
Cons: If you don’t plan on renting a surrey/bike or riding the monorail be prepared to walk, bring the stroller.  In the hot Miami summer it gets steamy.

Hidden secrets: on our second visit we had the kids wear bathing suits under their clothes and found a splash pad about half way through our visit.  The kids played cheerfully while we sipped beers and ate popcorn in the shade.

Food: Typical park food - pizza, chicken fingers, ice cream, etc.  They did offer beer (which always make my husband happy) and some areas of the zoo offered food that was regional (i.e. South American).

Parking: Free & Abundant

Points of Interest: The Gold Coast Railroad Museum is located on the same property as Zoo Miami, we haven’t visited yet, but it’s on our to-do list. We are especially looking forward to Thomas the Tank Engine visit!

During one of our visits it was “Dinosaurs LIVE” at the Zoo.  The kids loved seeing replica dinosaurs up close.  Just an added to the enjoyment at the zoo.

Florida Family Travels - the beginning.

It was a three day trip, an adventure! That brought our little family to South Florida.  Adjusting has been made easier by visiting all that South Florida has to offer.  However, I found myself disappointed in the lack of advice on the internet about places to see with families. Florida Family Travels was born out of that disappointment.  All of these opinions are ours and we stand by them (but be your own judge!).

We hope to bring you at least two reviews a week of South Florida parks, zoos, beaches, restaurants and more.

Here is a list of what is coming up in the next few weeks:

  1. Zoo Miami
  2. Flamingo Gardens
  3. Hollywood Food Truck Night
  4. Jungle Island
  5. Sanibel
  6. Boca Raton Children’s Museum
  7. Fern Forest
  8. Pompano Beach
  9. Hugh Taylor Birch State Park

We are open to any suggestions in South Florida and beyond!  Please leave a comment with you favorite place to visit in Florida!
